Title

Tofu Acidic Wastewater Treatment by Anaerobic Fixed Bed Reactor

Abstract

In this study, anaerobic treatment of tofu acidic wastewater by using fixed bed reactor (FBR) compared with upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor (UASB) were examined with an increased organic loading rate. Cut bamboos used as biofilm carrier. Without neutralization, FBR showed better performance than UASB, at COD load 4.3 kg COD/m3.day, the highest TOC removal efficiency 95% and methane gas yield 0.56 L/g TOC-removed were achieved. The bacterial community showed that Paludibacter and unclassified Bacteriodetes belong to family Porphyromonadaceae were the two most abundant genus. Hydrogenotrophic methanogens belonging to genus Methanoculleus and Methanobacterium were the most dominant archaea, suggesting that hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis with the syntrophic oxidation of volatile fatty acids was a major pathway of methane formation.
